Squirrel Deterrent

Looking to deter squirrels from the bird feeders in my garden, i have been told that the smell of peppermint oil is good for this purpose but getting mixed messages as to whether it also puts off the birds. Let me know if you have any experience of this otherwise any other suggestions would be welcome.

We simply changed to a bird feeder like this. The squirrels tried for a bit then gave up and left the birds to it.
