A lot of modern cars have day time running lights on as the default.

Where have you been for the last few years - driving lights standard on new cars for 5 years or more.

Manufacturers have been required to fit daytime running lights to all new cars since 2011:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/daytime-running-lights/daytime-running-lights

I have a 2013 Ford Focus with no daytime running lights.

I have a 2004 Jaaag with running lights.

You have a Jaguar car?

Anything to waste fuel.  Increase pollution.

they are not using tilly lamps OG. PMSL!

Oh silly me.

I hadn't realised the car lights were powered by magic.

LEDs OG It would be a trace amount of fuel over a year. Maybe our resident nitpickers will work it out. I can't be arised.

I presume you have a radio in your car?

Trace still exists. It's the policy to have them on that's flawed.

I note that the election campaign is over and all pretence has been dropped.

Lightbulb moment.

Besides aren't those LED car lights the very ones criticised for dazzling drivers ?

OG so in your world anything that is not necessary for the car at the moment it is in is a waste of fuel. Right oh!  I take it you have removed all the bulbs from everything in your car? Glove box, door, boot, interior? No radio/CD? Heater/AC - must be a dark, uncomfortable boring ride in your jam jar. That damn glove box light must be using 1p a decade!

It's be surprised of running lights used 10p a year in fuel.

The problem isn't the running lights, it's the increasing numbers of motorists who drive on dipped or worse still, full headlights during the day.

I have a 2011 Qashqai and their headlights are awful when driving at night I can hardly see in front of me.

Whereas I feel my husbands 2024 VW Troc blinds me as he comes up the drive.

Dazzle arises from the contrast between ambient light level and the light of the car's lights. During the day, the dazzle effect should be minimal, unless the car's lights are very bright and focussed towards oncoming drivers. That might happen, although I don't drive and so have no personal experience.

Wasn't it originally an EU requirement?

Both our Jaaag and BMW have running lights and auto switch on headlights.

BMW has LED headlights the Jaag has Xenon, both nice and bright.

Both have twin turbos's too OG so healthy amount of fuel pumped in 🤣
