can my son buy my council house?

He is on the rent book, so would he be able to buy it in his name? How much discount do you get buying from the council, i have been a tenant for 29 years xx

Don't know if the rules have changed but if your son wants to buy the house, you would need to go on the mortgage for 3 years in order to get the discount.
Your son would then "buy you out" in theory once the 3 years have elapsed.

Things might have changed a bit though.

If you contact your local council's 'right to buy' section they will give you all the details. I don't think he would be able to buy it in his sole name. You would get the maximum discount but there is usually a figure which you can't go beyond, i.e. however long you had been there it would not be more than �20k or �34k etc. depending on where you live.

The only trouble is my son is not earning, but his girlfriend is and she would like to get the mortgage put in both thier names, will the council allow for the mortgage to come from both thier names? see i will be moving out shortly and leaving them to it. xx
