I have moved into a new house and the boiler seems quite old. With it being cold at the moment i have had my heating on constantly. I have noticed that every few days the boiler drops water out of the bottom and the pressure drops. does this sound like an expensive thing to sort???

You are going to have to get it fixed whatever the cost and as it could be a multitude of things it is impossible to say, could be minor or could be terminal. It might be worth you biting the bullet and going for a new high efficiency condensing boiler and save on the running costs to recoup your money.

gilby, all pressurised boilers have temperature and pressure relief valves fitted to them. You have one of the folliwing problems

1, boiler overheating! (relief valve opens to allow water out to prevent water boiling)

2, Pressure vessel not charged with air! (relief valve opens to allow water out to prevent over pressurising the system)

3, Relief valve fault (passing water like a dripping tap)

Any one of the above faults will result in your system losing pressure. Also, the boiler should have a pipe connected to it to release this water safely outside and not onto the floor. Keep in mind that should the fault be option 1 or 2 above this water will eject from the boiler with high pressure and high temperature.
