two ways:

the proper, permanent way - get a competent sparky to run a new feed into the loft, from your main lighting circuit. A switch near my loft door then just pops this on, a pretty simple job if you know what you are doing.

the cheap and cheerful - an inspection lamp from B&Q or elsewhere with a long flex or extension lead, out of the loft doorway and plugged into the nearest socket. Of course, be careful not to trip on any trailing flexes.

Cheers Steve

If you only go up there now and then to check out leaks etc... then the portable inspection light is the easiest way around the problem. If you can, purchase a heavy duty bulb for the for the light as a normal bulb will burn out if knocked against something like a roof support and leave you blacked out, (oops!! is that allowed these days) maybe I should say leave you in darkness.
The quickest and easiest way would be to use one of those battery operated lights.

Here's an example:

No wiring, no mess. I don't know how efficient they are but they've got to be better than nothing.
Regarding the battery ones, they eat through batteries. Forget them.
I agree about the battery operated lights.
I have 2 mains lights one at each end of my loft but still find that a trailing inspection light is best for getting into the darkest corners. Even a 1 million candle-watt rechargeable torch only lasts about 20 minutes at a time.
