I had a new gas meter recently fitted as arranged by Siemens/British Gas.Since I weekly check readings I have found with the new meter's weekly readings have doubled despite the same weather conditions and times the heating is on .I can't get an explanation from BG

Is there anybody else who has had the same experience?

Are you sure you are reading it correctly, new meters are metric rather than the old cubic feet per minute?

OK If my weekly average readings were 16 ? and the new meter is reading is reading 35 cubic metres ,is that consistant with your theory which I consider the amount of gas used is the same. Somehow I think if that was the case the new metric readings would be a lot lower than the old imperial readings unless I am missing some dimension or mismeasurement ? Anyhow you have given me some hope that all is not lost but appreciate it you could expand on your greater knowledge of gas meter measurement.

The digital meters do read in larger cubic metres but your average weekly reading of 16 cubic feet would equal about .45 cubic metres so you haven't used even one cubic metre yet. You are probably reading the first two numbers which should be ignored for meter reading purposes and if so, this sounds about right. Gas is charged in Kilowatt hours and is converted from cubic metres with a formula in your bill. Hope that helps.

Most modern gas meters measure in cubic metres. On mine the black on white numbers to the left are the cubic metres then there is a decimal point followed by three red on white numbers to the right. Perhaps you read the numbers to the right of the decimal point? (which actually equate to litres).

My present meter reading reads

203.874 (Last three digits in red)

which must mean 203 whole cubic metres which over a period of 6 weeks is double the reading of the old meter while I consider using the same amount of gas.So either my old meter was undermeasuring or the new one is overmeasuring.

I still await a reply from BG.Meanwhile I seriously consider switching.

It all seems odd, must some explanation, do you have a meter reading Kilowatt hours maybe?

Although it doesn't match previous readings, 203 cubic metres is about average for 6 weeks for a typical 3 bed house in winter. Perhaps your old meter was faulty and you've been getting very cheap gas!

Thanks for your replies. I have had my suspicions as to whether the old meter was reading low. I await my next BG statement and fear the worst . I must add the service from BG in answer to my query is absymal with no response at all with repeated requests.
