Dimplex storage heaters

I have just moved into a property with Dimplex storage heaters and am having troubles understanding them. I have eventually worked out the controls however am being given different advice regarding the mains plug. Someone said keep the mains plug switch on or the stored heat will be lost. Another person said turn the plug off in the morning and only switch it on when you need heat throughout the day. They are manually operated i.e. with boost control and input control dials. Help!

Storage heaters are crap .They have bricks inside which are heated up during the night and are supposed to give out that heat during the day. So you'd normally leave the mains switch on if you want some heat from that particular heater. In reallity, by the time you get home from work, most of the heat will have disappeared. You really have to know in advance what level of heat you require for the next day. If you get it wrong, and there's too much heat, the only way to cool down is to open the windows to let out the heat that you've paid for. Switching on the heater during the day will not have any affect as there will be no power to the heaters at that time. This is controlled by a time clock, or sometimes by a radio signal transmitted by the electricity supplier. You should check with the supplier what times they turn on this lower tarrif supply, as it varies throughout the country. It costs a fortune and the only people who benefit are the suppliers who take your money.

Hi daisy, I install a lot of storage heaters and controlled properly they are quite an economical form of heating,if there is such a thing now,

The main switch at the side is left on for the duration of time you want the heaters to work say Oct to March

The input control is a thermostat so if it was very cold you would put that on max or the highest number,the boost control ideally should be turned down to the lowest number otherwise all of the heat will escape during the day when you are out,if left on the lowest number during the day you can then turn it up to a higher number in the evening letting out some of the stored heat, but turn it back down before going to bed ,unless your house is really well insulated the storage heaters are only any good as a background heat, so give it a go but not everybody likes them but they do run on off peak electric so they don't cost a fortune to have them on for that couple of months a year
