gas and electricity metre

Mine are under the stairs at the moment and I would like them outside. I have been told I have to call Transco for the gas metre. Is this so? And do I need the electricity company to move the electrity metre or could any electrician do that? Thank you.

I think Transco are National Grid now. I would have thought it would be the company that has to move the meter, or if not they would at least want to know where it's been moved to as its probably their property? I got no idea really. Sure someone else will be more helpful!

Both have to be moved by the authorities concerned. As Hgrove states - NationalGridTransco are what Transco are now known as and they have responsibility for your gas meter. A starting point for the electricity meter would be your supplier - they may refer you to whoever WAS the local are supplier if you have since switched.

Expect considerable cost for the gas meter - I was quoted �250 several years ago to have mine moved 5 foot in a vertical line. Reason given was that the supply pipe had to be excavated, squeezed to stop the supply, reconnected, made good etc.

You also need to pay to have your electrics and gas reconnected to the new meter positions.

To get the gas meter moved you need to contact the relevant gas distribution company. This will depend upon where you live. (National Grid is a misleading name. They supply less than a third of the UK, by area).

The electricity meter must be moved by the relevant distribution company. This is not the same company that sends you your bill. The easiest way to find out who to contact is to look in the front of your local Yellow Pages. Under 'Essential Information: Emergency Numbers' (probably on page 2), you'll see 'Household Emergencies: Electricity'. Here you'll see the name of the relevant company. (Obviously, you shouldn't dial the emergency number but, now that you know the name, you can look them up in the ordinary phone book. The name of the gas distribution company can also be found via this route).

I've just had to have both my meters moved as part of an extension we're having built. I started by contacting my energy supplier ( I get gas & elec from the same one) & they organised most of it for me. You must use the correct company to do the move, as they own your meters.

It cost around �350 for EACH meter! And that didn't include digging new trenches for supply, supplying new meter boxes or any re-connection, as that is all being done by our builder, electrician & plumber.

Be prepared to wait a while as well - the electric meter was moved within 2-3 weeks, we are still waiting for the gas one more than 6 weeks down the line!
