how do i find out who owns the land

trying to find out who owns the piece of land near me. I sent a map and info to the land registry and they sent my cheque back saying it wasnt registered. so does anyone have any ideas on how to find out?

The only way is to ask around, otherwise squat on it and you should find out! If you still don't then fence it and after ten years you can start a claim. Hang on, it's not my garden is it?

Or apply for planning permission for a house .... then they might appear out of the woodwork ...
