Usual question that everybody asks AFTER their Deeds have been filed away.... Looking out from my back door, which fence is my responsibility- the right side or the left side? The 'best side facing you is your neighbours responsibility' won't do in this case I'm afraid as the fence on my right looks equal from my side and my neighbours

I'm afraid the only way to find out is to request a copy of the deeds - the left/right thing is a bit of a misconception (although there will indeed be properties that follow that rule by default!).
The easy answer, that seems to be accepted in law, is that the side that has the fence posts owns the fence and is therefore their responsibility
The only way to find out is to look in your deeds. I always get a photocopy when buying a new house. Saves having to pay the building society, or whatever, the earth later on. Blenders answer is usually correct, but not always. I live in the middle plot of 3 houses. The 'edge' fences are owned by my neighbours (even though the fence posts of one are on my side), so I am only responsible for the one at the bottom of my garden.
Ive dealt with this question before when working for a building society and usually its the left side. Cupra is right you should check your deeds, it may be cheaper to view your deeds at a branch office rather than request a copy - from memory expect to pay upto 55 for this, it can be added to your mortgage account.
