Is there such a scheme [in UK] where home owners wanting to move can arrange to exchange houses with possibly a balance to pay either way?
I'm thinking about a permanent move, not a holiday arrangement, and can't be a**ed with all the hassle of buying and selling through an estate agency.

I've never heard of any scheme like that but there is nothing to stop you and another person arranging privately to buy each others houses as long as both parties have agreed the final price that they are selling for. I've done it before, it's just the same process as buying a house through an estate agent, only minus agents fees. Each party would need to appoint their own seperate solicitor, as seaches, etc. and conveyancing work will still have to be done the same as if you had sold through an estate agent. Also I had to sign a form my solicitor sent me stating exactly what was included in the price of the property. ie. curtains, carpets, light fittings, etc. A solicitor will tell you what the process involves and give you a quote for the work. If mortgages are involved either way, it will involve a little more work as lenders will have to be notified and finances sorted out on both sides. Once the contracts are exchanged and a moving date agreed, it will be all legally binding and there can be no quibbles either way.

If there is a difference in the price either way that will be sorted out during the legal process and any balances paid to the new owner of the cheapest property. With no property chain to worry about, it can be a lot less stressful.

I've been thinking the exact same thing!

Excellent idea - maybe a business opportunity for somebody.

You don't want to move to Dudley, do you? LOL

Not really Ethel........I've no doubt that the area around Dudley must have a lot of good points, particularly road and rail connections to anywhere, but the Largo Bay area of Fife must win hands down just for its wide open spaces and scenery.
Some things money just can't buy.
Sorry.
Shame - you've broke my heart.

I've always fancied the wilds of Scotland.
