Knitting Scarves
5 Answers
Many years ago, as a youngsters, in the 50s we used to knit scarves, when it reached the required length we "dropped" some of the stitches to create a sort of ladder effect. I'm sure there was more to the pattern than that, so I'd be so pleased if anyone can remember.
Thanks in advance.

Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches and knit three rows.
Next
Knit 1, yarn around needle twice, knit 1; repeat from * across.
Next Row Knit, dropping extra stitches from previous row.
Knit 3 rows.
This will give you a scarf that has the ladders and then a band of three knit rows all the way up.
All I could find amongst my knitting paraphenalia at the moment.
You can do this pattern on any size needles using any yarn weight.

Thanks shaneystar. Not quite the one I remember (or is my memory playing tricks, as usual?), but I'm now using your pattern and it's making a nice change.
The only knitting I do at the moment is scarf-making for the Christmas Shoe boxes, so a change of pattern from time to time makes it much more interesting.
