It would be good practice to remove the redundant backboiler, as any remaining water in the boiler / ciculation pipes would become stagnant, and could possibly create a smell in the area where circ pipes have been disconnected. More importantly, on a safety aspect, it is possible that someone could cap off the circulation pipes. If ,say some one else moves into your premises at a later date, and they decide to remove the gas fire and have a coal fire, the boiler would then explode. ( sorry to be a doom and gloom merchant )
If the property is old, maybe the surveyor could have suggested lining the flue, complete with fire box, or standard opening with sealing plate. This would mean that the boiler would have to be removed.
Hope this helps.
