taking cutting off sage bush

how can I take a cutting off a sage bush? Some ideas please.

last autumn my sage bush threw up some runners so i pulled them up and planted them. this year they have taken. you could try taking new growth and putting in compost. hopefully some may take.

Many herbs can be propagated by cuttings for rooting indoors. This method works especially well for plants too large to move in their entirety. Plants such as basil, oregano, lavender, rosemary, thyme and sage root easily from shoot tip cuttings. Take the cutting at a node on the stem (where the leaves attach), because this is where root formation is more abundant. Remove the lower leaves and insert the cut end of the stem into moist media such as soil mix, vermiculite or perlite. Cover the container with plastic to help increase relative humidity. If the plastic lays on the foliage, it can decay. Place the pot in a warm, shaded location

As meltoadhall says its a good idea to look out for runners and basal shoots because they have often already started to root and half the battles won!

Other methods are softwood cuttings in summer 3"-4"(young tips) cut just below a leaf junction, a dab of rooting hormone will help if you have some, 1 cutting in a 2" pot or 4 or 5 in a 4" pot, best taken before you sage flowers.
