Bark

just moved to country from city.had to have birch trees taken down due to power lines. i used the shredded bark to cover large area where shrubs are growing now everything turning brown. had shop bought bark down previously.i dont know very much about gardening? think i have taken on to much with 1 acre....and this highland weather does not help...can anyone help please!!!!!!
