What is the best way to remove smells from a carpet. Especially dog urine?

Vinegar, it may stink for a day but all odors will be gone! Trust me I have 4 dogs plus seven puppies!

Thanks, I remember hearing about that before now, but do you use it neat or diluted a bit? Does it matter what sort of vinegar, brown or clear?

I've been told by vets here in the U.S. that a mixture of 25% white vinegar and 75% water (or a mixture of 1 to 4) is good for carpets. The vinegar evaporates rapidly and the water dilutes the smell of the vinegar. Actually smells rather fresh! Good luck!!
