Planning the house extension

Our hot water tank is in the airing cupboard on the landing at present. When the extension is complete I think we'll need a larger tank etc to cope with demand. Is it possible to house the new tank in the loft?

There is no reason why not, as long as it can be supported safely and there is access for maintenance. A company called Gledhill used to make bespoke cylinders i.e. any shape or size that you require.

You'd need to make sure you insulated the tank exceptionally well. Also your new airing cupboard would do less airing because it relies on small amounts of heat leaking from the hot water system to keep it warm.

A conventional vented cylinder requires a feed tank above it so you can only fit this type if you have sufficient room for the feed tank above it in the loft. An unvented mains water fed type can be fitted anywhere.

You can fit a larger cylinder in your airing cupboard or you can heat your existing cylinder more effectively by leaving the hot water on all day and letting the cylinder thermostat keep the temperature up for ready use.
