fire surround and backboard?

Hi....... I've been told that when fitting a backboard I first have to remove my fire surround from the wall to enable it to slotted behind my surround.

The brackets for my fire surround are pointing inwards towards the recess to were the backboard should go......do i need to attack brackets to the outer part of my fire surround how else can i fix it back to the wall?
