dosset, Lonnie & heathfield. Re shrub ?

I saw dossets original post on 7-5-06 and had a hunch about this plant but was hesitant, mainly due to the word shrub, its acually classed as a border perenial, apart from that,I thought it too much of a coincidence, as I'd only just recomended this plant to someone who wanted a ground cover plant for their clay soil on 1-5-06. The garden form of the wild comfry or Symphytum often grows much lower and there are several varieties to choose from ie 'ibericum' 'Hidcote pink' 'Hidcote blue' 'Goldsmith' 'uplandicum 'varigatum', the latter mentioned being the tallest 3ft (90cm) the other about 1ft (30cm).It dose make a very vigorous ground cover plant and will soon fill in an area and if dug up, I find it dose not persist like a weed. it can also be very easily propergated by deviding clumps during spring. hope this has been of some help to this thread, ps i'll follow my hunch next time.

thanks for the info .when i first saw the plant it was dark ,only the hotel garden lights for illumination and i did have a few drinks so at the time it did look a bit like a shrub.is it possible to grow in a tub so as to contain it?

Hi dosset, Yes, I can see how it looked like a shrub from the hotel window, especially after a few bevies, I must admit, I thought I must have been drinking too much when I saw the flowers on mine had changed colour every time I looked at it.

I think you could contain it in a large planter/tub, but be prepaired, it may try to escape, as it spreads itself by creeping 'over-ground' stems (stolons) that may eventually creep down the side of the pot looking for new land to conquer, propergation material perhaps ? I think I enjoy giving answers almost as much as Lonnie. Hope its been helpful..Good Luck.
