What's the best way

To get rid of unsightly black mould all over my bathroom? We've got a vent which is useless, and we leave the door open when we have a shower etc to let the steam out. It really looks horrible. We were thinking of getting a dehumidifier but they seem to be expensive, anyone got any ideas?

It is very difficult to get rid of. Most of the time it is caused by lack of ventilation and condensation makes it worse ...try opening a window as often as you can, check your airbrick/vent and see if it is blocked, plus you can buy anti mildew paint so it may be worth giving it a try. My Mother had a similar problem in one of her rooms and the only way she resolved it was to have an extra airbrick installed.

To get rid of the mould you already have, try using Dettox Mould and Mildew Remover. I use this and it is excellent, though I only get a light build up in the top corner of my ceiling above my shower every so often. If you have a bad build up, you will probably need to leave it on for an hour and so and then give the affected areas a good scrub. To help minimise mould in the future, use a paint specifically for bathrooms (don't be tempted to paint over the mould as I once did, it just creeps through!!).

I bought a de-humidifier for a previous house and it was very effective. But, it was not only expensive to buy but expensive to run as well. The advertising says they only cost a few pence an hour to run, which is true, but it soon adds up because you really need to have it on most of the time. I certainly noticed a jump in my electricity consumption over several months while using it.

Also - an extractor fan might help if it's possible to fit in your bathroom.

green spray bottle of 'dettol mould and mildew remover' it dissolves the mould off, got mine for sainsburys

wear old clothes because it can take the colour out, if you spray/splash yourself.
