Can I connect my washing machine waste pipe to the rain down pipe to the underground soak away outside my garage. If so, is this legal?

You can, but you shouldn't. It isn't illegal as such but 1/ it is against the building regulations and 2/ the Environmental Agency would probably prosecute you (or at least take you to task and demand you change it) for pollution should you ever be found out.

We have a small stream near our village and it suddenly started becoming soap-sudy and overgrown with algae and other such gunk. We asked the Environmental Agency to have a look and they said is was caused by foul (IE sewage) water being discharged into surface water drainage, probably outlet from a sink or washer. The chemicals in the waste water encourage algae to grow in the water.

Thanks for the info, it would now seem I dont have to go ahead anyway. It was just in case I put my washer in the unused garage. Many thanks.
