A half-moon edging iron is a great help, they usually have a 'T' shaped handle with a1/2 moon blade which you push down through the turf/sod with your foot, to keep the edge nice'n straight you can peg out a line, use a plank of wood of if confident just follow the line of your path, once you have a neat edge, you can keep it maintained with a pair of edging shears to trim off any overhanging grass. these shears are like regular shears but are angled at 45 degrees to make it easier to trim along the horizontal edge. You can do this with a normal spade and shears but it will be harder work with an inferior finnish Good Luck. T bird.
Ps.. tip dont cut back too far from the edge otherwise you will create a 'weed-trap' for yourself.
