I think plenty can be grown in an east facing aspect, I have my frontage facing this way too. I find begonias do well and impatians but real sun lovers like mesembryanthemums may strugle as the sun makes its journy west.
For perenials you may be asking for trouble if you plant anything thats frost tender, as a lot of the damage is done as the early morning sun thaws the frost in late winter / early spring unless it very sheltered such as mine is, where I've managed to grow a hardy fan palm (trachycapus) Good luck.
Hi froggo, you can grow polyanthus and pansies for the spring, begonia, busy lizzie, fuchsia for summer or hosta's and most ferns, there really is a long list of things, I am presuming you want bedding and not shrubs, there are also a lot of perennials you can grow, and bulbs depending on your soil type. Hope this helps.
