Cleaning pebbles

The large pebbles in my pebble fountain water feature are looking very black and grimey. What's the best (and easiest) way of cleaning them? I'm bulking at having to dismantle all the stones off their black plastic base but suspect it may be the only way to do it properly. Ideally I would like to restore the nice shiney surface the stones had originally which brought out their individual colourings but suspect this won't be possible.

Chlorine tablets or bleech would be the best bet....providing there's no wildlife in there (frogs etc)

We visited my brother in law last night & he was talking about how someone he knows told him to put some Milton (baby sterilizing fluid )into his water feature as his stones had gone all black .He did & now it looks as good as new. (make sure no fish come into contact though.

Thank you both for your suggestions. As we get a number of baby frogs lurking under the stones from early July onwards I can see I shall shall have to be patient for a while until they've all hibernated. Then I suspect we'll have to do a major dismantling job and give all the stones a good soaking with Milton sterilising fluid.
