I have inherited some very lovely good quality paving slabs and want to cover my dull grey concrete path with them.Is this possible ?

If the concrete path is sound,i cant think why not, just check your damp course wont be below the new slabs.
Agreed. If they are stable they make a perfect base provided the final level they create will be OK for you. If they abut against the wall of the house, they should not come any higher than 2 bricks below the DPC - or they may enable moisture to bridge across into the wall bricks above the DPC.
