Cucumber help !
3 Answers
I have now been eating my own cucumbers for about three weeks now. The plants still have fruit coming but the plant itself is beginning to look a bit tired and the leaves are going yellow. Is this normal or do you think I am watering too much, about three times a day.
Also I have tried spring onions. Have sown twice about three weeks apart and so far not a spring has sprung. The packet said it was an easy crop,( white lisbon ).They have been sown in rows next to a row of radish which are doing great.
Any advice greatfully received. Thanks. xx

Try a liquid fertiliser like Tomorite. I'd also just water them well once a day but spray the leaves as cucumbers like a humid atmosphere to thrive.
Spring onions can sometimes be slow to germinate and I suspect that this current heatwave is making the soil just to hot for them to germinate, even if you're keeping it moist. I'm having problems with several of my successions sowings at the moment - carrots, beans and lettuce so it's probably the high temperature and nothing to do with your ability as a gardener.

Thanks again WendyS. I am feeding once a week with tomato feed but I will try spraying the leaves. We originally moved the cucumbers because the heat was scorching the leaves but can't move again as they are trained up a net. Have you ever tried the mini cucumber Petita. They have a superb flavour. Went to see if I could get seeds instead of plants. 3.45 for 5 seeds. I think I will just buy the plants, doesn't work out much more expensive and if I time it right and get them in different batches as they come in I might get a reasonable control over a longer period. We have even cleared a bed ready for next year. it's only about 15ft long and 4ft deep but I'm sure I can pack a lot in. Don't want it to take over my life but we are having such fun and it gives them something to laugh about at work. S goes out every morning to measure his cucumbers !!! I kid you not, no wonder I'm the butt of the jokes at work !
Once again thanks for the advice. xx
