Can I use new wood chippings to mulch a flower bed?

Sure... they make good mulch, although I would avoid chips made from fresh pine or other evergreen trees such as fir. They can leach out resins that can affect soil and plant health. On the other hand, if you are raising rhododendrons or azaleas or other plants that prefer low Ph.'s then the pine bark or mulch will lower the Ph. factor to near 5.0. Some growers feel that the wood mulch attracts termites, but here in the U.S. that has not proven to be a factor. Good luck!
