I think i've gone to work this morning and left the iron on aftrer i was using it! i've called morphy richards, the company that makes the iron and they said it wont switch itself off but it will cool down once it gets too hot and then start to get hot again. So they think it will be ok - what do you think!?

I think i'd have called a neighbour to turn it off. But then I love in the sticks and leave key under a flowerpot!
I did leave my Philips iron plugged in for about 6 hours once, accidentally of course. Nothing happened, but if I were you I'd probably be panicking all day 'just in case'. Do you not have a key left with someone else who could go in and unplug it for you?
if you had time to phone the company did you not have time to nip home and switch it off?

No one that is around has a key - mum dad sister and nan and granddad are all on holiday! We dont really trust the neighbours so they wouldnt be able to get in!

Lukey121 - I live in Romford and work in central london (over an hour journey), so no, I dont have time to pop home and turn it off, otherwise i'd be doing that right now!!
Where did you leave the iron? Was it on the ironing board stand? If so it'll probably be ok. I too have accidentally left an iron unattended for a few hours, nothing happened.

If your really worried perhaps you could finish work early and go home?

Arrrgghhh..1 unit and hour, quick hurry home and switch it off!!

You might be lucky Alixw, and find all the ironing done when u get home!!

Well, as i was only ironing a pair of trousers and the iron was upstairs, i just laid a towel down quickly and did it on the floor. will that make a lot of difference?

Jeep - what does '1 unit and hour mean'?
I hope you're not there because you've gone home to sort iron out Alixw. The reason we said it probably be OK on ironing board is that such things are able to withstand heat. I'd be worrying too if I'd left it on the carpet.
The iron does not heat up all the time. when it has reached the desired set temp it cuts off and thermostat kicks back on when the temp falls. so dont worry, it wont burn the house down

Thanks for all your answers guys, have spent the day feeling sick with worry! Boss is letting me leave early today thank god!
Sorry so late replying Alixw,

I unit of electricity per hour is average for iron..
Shame you don't have a secretary - my boss once asked me to travel the 1 1/2 hour journey to his house just to check whether he'd shut his windows! And then of course there was the 1 1/2 hour journey back again. He was worried about burglars (in London) and needless to day the windows were shut. But I got a nice day out of the office, and a bunch of flowers as a thank you!

I hope everything was ok when you got home Alixw.
I left mine on once - on the floor but 'standing up' and it was fine as it was fairly new at the time. However, and not to alarm you too much, once it was older and had prob had a few knows, one morning I was ironing and had a nylon dressing gown - big wide sleeves on. It suddenly went up in flames where the wire went into the back (this is over ten years ago), shrivelling the sleeve - luckly I got it off with minor burn. Since then, like a mad woman, I say out loud - " I am unplugging the iron and moving it away" Sounds mad but works as I have done it consciously and therefore remember. best of luck, think the newer models are all pretty good. Yes agreee a 3 min phone call is a bit different to a one hour journey plus the negotiation with your bosses...

Thanks everyone for your concerns and help on Friday when I thought I had left the iron on! Turns out I hadn't!!!! I felt so sick when i was driving home, I was positive i could smell smoke and hear sirens in the distance! And just to make me feel so much better, there was a load of traffic so it took me longer to drive home from the station! I nearly collapsed with relief when i ran upstairs and saw that it was off! Needless to say, i will be sooooo much more careful when ironing now!!
