ivy and other plants from next door

Sorry for another post!
The ivy (and other plants) from next door keep growing through the fence between our gardens. They grow so quickly and seem to push their way through the most unlikely of gaps and wrap their way round.

I have been cutting them off when they come through but they grow so quickly I am having to do this every other day it seems! The lady has said it's ok to do this but i'd rather not have to, seeing as they are her plants. I am also concerned that if i leave it, it will damage the fence (which is ours).
Can i ask her to keep control of it from her side? What if she doesn't? She know about the problem but I think she is fine with me chopping off what grows through, whereas I am not! Any advice?

Unfortunately this is an annual problem for most people. I have the same problem & to be honest my neighbour gets some of our plants growing through to their side. Without sounding patronising, don't let it become an issue, cut it down when you need to & keep on good terms with your neighbour. :0)

You and me both CiderMonkey. We have one of these loose panelled fences and during the growing season almost every day I'm either yanking next door's ivy out from under he fence or snipping it off as it tries to force open the panels. I have no easy solution to this since my next door neighbour likes the "wild garden" effect. A previous post on this subject did suggest a product you can buy to paint on ivy leaves to kill them but I haven't tried it yet so can't report on how effective it is. The problem with ivy seems to be that it is so resilient that even if you think you've killed it off, it keeps sprouting up again. I think the only thing you can do is talk to her and tell her that's it becoming a real issue damaging the fence and ask if she'll be prepared to go 50-50 with you in replacing it when the ivy has damaged it beyond repair.

what gets me most is that she even joked about what trouble the ivy is and how uncontrollable it is so i get the idea she isn't even too keen on it herself. I am half inclined to help it to a timely death!!

You could of course use Roundup or Tumbleweed on the dreaded ivy - and then deny all knowledge of the dying plant! Just spray on the intruding parts, not over the fence! It would probably need several applications (in the dead of night) especially as you wouldn't be spraying the whole plant but it does kill ivy eventually

I think that the law requires you to throw any parts that you cut off back over the fence - otherwise you can be accused of theft !!!
