The taps in my new place (well new to me) don't work. The landlord reckons the water has been turned off so I just need to turn it back on.
Apparently I need to locate the stopcock.
I can't find the damn thing but then I don't really know what I'm looking for.
Can anyone give me a clue?

It is a tap fixed to your water mains input to the house. If it is turned off then your taps wont work. It is usually the done thing to do if the house is going to be empty for any length of time Rgds Al
PS It might not be there so you will have to look for it. That's where mine is anyway.

Hi!
Try either under the kitchen sink or in a cupboard or out on the path at the front of your house :o)
Your basically looking for a pipe that has a tap on it in the house.
If you still can;t find it give your water company a ring see if they can help shed light on where it may be.
Hope that helps :o)

If its the taps for the kitchen sink, there should be another tap usually brass against the wall under the sink. If its all the taps in the house there is usually a tap outside the house underground. Ours is on the pavement outside the front of the house under a metal lid about 4/5 inches square. If you cant find it ask the landlord where it is as you wont pay anymore rent until the water is turned on.
It looks like the picture at http://tinyurl.com/h2drz . It will be either horizontally or vertically in a run of pipe. If the pipes are lagged you will see the top brass bit sticking through. Sometimes they can be a bit hard to turn, and, if so, use a wrench to get a bit of leverage.
