This is what the Encyclop�dia Britannica has to say...

"Christian Schoenbein invented nitrocotton (guncotton) in 1845 by dipping cotton in a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acids and then removing the acids by washing with water."

Nitrocellulose. see above. Cotton is mainly cellulose

Apparently Schonbein wiped up a spillage of Nitric & Sulphuric acid, using a linen teacloth and hung it above his stove to dry. it burst into flames and burnt rapidly, leading him to experiment further to develop Nitrocellulose.
