I have just bought a second hand dining table and chairs in pine, however, it is that horrible orangey pine stain that has been used. Will stripping it tone down the colour or will it be imbedded in the grain now.

Cheers

I'm with you on that one, ali, our bed's the same colour. It will depend on whether it was stained before it was varnished, I suppose. it may just be a coloured varnish. Try giving it a scrape on a part you can't see.
Strip it down to bare wood and apply a more natural colour , be sure to get all varnish off or it will be patchy.
we bought a beautiful pine surround mirror & the surround had been painted in an awful grey colour. I used Nitromors paint remover & together with some fine wire wool following the grain of the wood it removed it much better than I thought. I then stained it and it now looks gorgeous. It won't be a quick job for table & chairs but worth the time and effort. best of luck
