Above my front door, front room door and kitchen door is a pane of that nasty safety glass (the kind with a grid of wires through it - quite often found in fire doors, schools etc).
Anyone any ideas on how to get rid of it - or more to the point cover it up?

My dad suggested painting it with glass staining paint - anyine know how I would do this or if it would work??

TIA

The purpose of such panes is to provide light into the space - perhaps your hall has no window, so no other natural light? Safety glass has moved on since the days of that dreadful material with a wire in it - you can get toughened glass that is clear. In a normal domestic dwelling there is no fire safety reason for wired glass. If you decide to paint it, try covering the glass with cardboard first just to be able to judge how dark it will make the hall.
you could try wallpapering it. I had to do this with a window above my daughter's room when she was a baby as the room was too light when people put the hall light on. I wallpapered it with some anaglypta and painted it the same colour as the wall. It did make it very inconspicuous and was cheaper than replacing it with anything else including mdf.
you can buy some sticky backed plastic that looks like frosted glass. This would still allow some light through without drawing attention to the wire. We have a door that had clear glass, but I wanted it to be frosted or etched, so we cuts strips of this sticky backed plastic with decorative edged scissors and stuck it on in horizontal strips, it looks really good and everyone thinks the glass has been professionally etched.
