Small Garden
4 Answers
My back garden is quite small. It's about 28 feet long and 20feet wide. It has a 24 foot long garage/workshop in it, so it only leaves about 10/11 feet width for the rest of the garden. It has a small space at the bottom end of the garage. It is has fence panels to the right hand side and at the bottom.
We have laid it mainly to grass with a small patio area at the entrance to the house. My problem is that we are trying to sell our house and everybodys feedback, is that the garden is too small. How can i make it look bigger? I have neighbours to the left, right and bottom of the garden. (the bottom of the garden is well screened by the neighbours trees.)
If you were looking for a house and found it, but the garden was too small, would this put you off? I have raised 2 children in it and never once did i think it was not big enough.

I'd spend most of my spare time teeming with frustration that I couldn't do any of the things I wanted to do, or grow the plants I wanted to grow. Maybe a single chap or young person who isn't keen on gardening would look on your small garden as a point in its favour.
Am not sure how you can make your garden look bigger. You could perhaps fix one of these "trompe d'oielel" mirrors on the back fence, set in a trellaced frame so that when you look at it, you get the impression it's a walkway to another part of the garden.

Thanks Wendy, i should have pointed out, that the front garden is quite big, has a lawn, borders and parking for about 6 cars. However it is open outlook, but wouldnt take much to fence off in some way to make it private. Not sure about the mirror idea, we are south facing and the sun is very strong, just a bit worried it may reflect and start a fire or something. Not sure if these are special mirrors that don't reflect that way or not.
my back garden isnt very big neither, say 11 x 11msq. our dog dug up all the grass and it was a mess so i put down gravel, added a few planted pots and now it looks twice the size. this is ok if it is young, single or people with no interest in gardening but if it is a family looking then they may prefer grass as a soft surface for little ones playing.
