hardy fuschias
3 Answers
I have recently bought 2 hardy fuschias but am unsure about which compost to use in the containers I intend to plant them in. Also, I would like to know about winter care for them-watering, frost protection etc. Many thanks.

Make sure there's good drainage from the pots, use stones or crocks in the bottom as fuchsias don't like to be soggy. Neither though do they like to be dried out so do keep watered & well fed - I prefer to add a tiny bit of fertiliser to each watering during the growing season rather than give them a large weekly/monthly dose that I'm good at forgetting! Oh, & they prefer a bit of shade, especially during the hottest hrs of the day.
In winter I would move them if possible to the most protected part of your garden or into a frost-free shed or greenhouse until they've matured & toughened up. Although they're classed as hardy frosts will generally cut them down to soil level but they do grow again from the base. Don't worry if your plants are slow to sprout in the spring & look dead . Enjoy them, they're lovely plants. :o)
