Scratched wood and cigarette ash

My mum tells me that i can fix the scratch in my table with ash but what do you do.

Never heard of ash before - although a coloured wax crayon can do the trick if it's not too deep

I've used cigarette ash mixed with a little olive oil (enough to make a paste) for removing white rings caused by setting hot cups on tables, but I don't see how it would help a scratch...
