which way do joists run

I am doing some lights in the down stairs ceiling but do not know which way the joist srun. the loft joists if i remember at my previous 2 houses run opposite to the downstairs ceiling joists. the house is 7 year old and a 4bed detached I know that you may not be exact but in general which way would they run in this type of house?
