Should I prune back my lavender and herbs over the winter?

If so, how much (I've never had a garden before)?

sorry to sound stupis but.... which bits do I prune back? On the lavender, do i just prune back the bits with the purple buds? Also, are herbs ok left outisde in the winter?
Sorry to but in but lavender should Never be pruned hard back but pruned lightly in April, following the natural contours of the plant. The fading flower heads can be removed any time from now on.. Good Luck Tbird+
