How do you fill in holes in wood please?

There are large nails and huges screws banged into the door frames of my house I've just moved to. Once I've removed them how to I filler the holes and what is the best product please? Many thanks.

Wood filler - available at most diy stores. When dry, sand lightly till smooth, then paint.

There is a product called 'plastic wood' it dries hard and can be sanded,planed & chissled when hard.

Are the screws/nails not needed to hold the door frame on ??
Would hate the frame to fall off if you took them out - can the screw/nails not be hammered in with a punch or screwed in a bit more then filled with plastic wood as gasman suggested ?

To recess a screw, drill a shallow hole the width of the screw head. This will reduce the chance of splitting the wood. For screws that spin and do not go tight, some toothpicks dipped in woodglue will help but don't overstuff the hole or over tighten the screw to avoid splitting the wood.

Plastic wood. You can get in many shades to match the wood. If you sand when setcannot tell where the hole is.

You say they are large naiils and screws. One way to obtain a good finish is to remove the objects and drill a suitable size hole. Make or buy a suitable size dowel rod, apply wood glue and tap the dowel into the hole. Cut or sand any protruding dowel. Suitable size means the drill size should match the size of dowel.
