My loft has virtually no insulation whatsoever, but I would like to get this sorted in the near future.I live in a house with a pitched roof and I am not sure if I need to insulate the pitched area as well as the floor. If I do, what thickness of inslation is required, bearing in mind that there is no insulation whatsover on the pitched area, and all you can see is the roof tiles.

Just lay the insulation over the floor area, minimum thickness of 10 inch will be fine
Check with your local council; you might be able to get a grant towards the cost (you pay your council tax, so get some of it back if you can!).
Before you put any insulation down put some plastic sheeting stapled to the rafters. Because there is no underslate protection your loft will fill up with debris blown in by the wind through the tiles.
Then lay 6" of insulation between the joists (max it will take). Then lay further insulation across the joists so there is at least 10" of insulation in total.
