In the garage of my rented home there is a light switch on the brickwork near the garage door. The wiring goes up and along just under the roof. There is a leak in the roof and water is dripping off the wiring, down the wiring, and out of the light switch. The bricks are sopping wet and the garage floor has puddles of water. Of course, I am not attempting to switch on the light out there but I am wondering with all the water I have to walk through to get to my car if there is any danger of getting electrocuted because the switch and bricks must surely be live?

Zimzam,Can you isolate the supply to the garage ? if you have a look at the consumers unit (fuseboard) there might be a mcb(fuse) marked garage, if not have a look in the garage for a white boxabout 3 and a half inches square and see if it has a liitle fuse holder in the middle if it has lift out the centre part and remove fuse,this should isolate it, if you can't find anything post back with what else there is in the garage, good luck, Ray

There is an old outside toilet that was removed and the floor concreted over. In that outside toilet area I have a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is a light out there and I can see wiring from that light going across the ceiling and into the garage and down to the switch for the garage light. To isolate the garage electricity means I pull the fuse out of the main fusebox so therefore would have no electricity to the downstairs lighting in the house. I am not using the garage light but am more concerned seeing the garage floor is running water that walking out there will give me a home perm.

Hi zimzam, near where the socket is for washing machine is there aother box with a little fuse in the middle,if you do have one this should be the one for the light,have tou contacted the owner of the house, because as you know water and electrics don't mix, have look though for the little box I described

There's a circuit breaker for the plug where my washing machine is but nothing for the lights and the garage lights feeds off of an internal light. I have notified my agent who is going to get the owner to visit and the agent has suggested a circuit breaker for the garage. meanwhile, is it safe for me to walk out on a very wet garage floor?

zimzam, it should be ok, but if you have a plank of wood or similar lay that down also wear rubber soled shoes,but they need to isolate this as a matter of urgency,let us know how you get on, Ray

Hi Ray, I am in rubber soled shoes as January is not the month that I walk on water. The owner will be here next week and I will let you know how I get on because anyone in the same situation may benefit from what I have had done in the way of safety. Thanks for your help.
