ideas wanted for a herb garden
8 Answers
Having tried for 2 years (and failed) to grow veggies in a small plot (which is too sheltered by trees/fence to grow anything significant) me and Mrs Vader fancy a herb garden instead - we will have 8 slots (imagine a square cut up 'pizza style' into 8 triangles) but not decided on what to plant - need ideas for herbs which are a) hardy enough for North England conditions b) ok to plant in sheltered (by trees) areas). So far i have on my list: Sage, Thyme, Chives, Rosemary, and possibly coriander (if i can get a hardy variety).

The only ones that can grow in partial shade are Chervil, Sweet Cecily, Bergamot, Angelica and Woodruff. The last one deters moths, and when used as a tea, soothes headaches!

Are you set on herbs? There are lots of plants which will flourish in tree shade eg hardy cyclamen, periwinkle, foxglove, ferns, millions of kinds of bulb. Honestly for herbs to be worth the picking, most of them need to be grown in more or less sunbaked conditions for the woody and sunny well watered for the leafy.
