How do I stop a wooden door from expanding?

Every winter I have to plane wood off my front door. When it dries out and shrinks there is a 10mm gap - this will probably be 12 mm this year. Does anybody know of a deep penetrating water repellent that I can use to stop this expansion?

Paint all surfaces of the door with a couple of coats of good quality oil-based paint. (This may involve removing the door). Most people don't bother with the top and bottom edges, but this can be the root of the problem you're having.
Avoid those paints that say 'microporous - helps the wood breathe'. 'Breathing' wood, taking in moisture laden air, is the last thing anyone should want, and is asking for trouble.
