Having just cleared out my spare room, I'm thinking of doing a boot sale. Do you have any tips, please?

Nicola Jane - Take a secure cash box [or better still a 'bum-bag'] with plenty of change in it [Silver and �1 coins]. Get at least one other person to help you. Take some food and a thermos of tea/coffee, plus if you've got room a couple of collapsible chairs. Get a pasting table to out your stuff on. When you load your car up, put the table in last of all. When you first arrive, you may get besieged by 'professional booters.' They'll crowd round your car, at our first booty someone reached into the car for my Missus's handbag! This is when your stuff is most at risk from nicking. Best thing to do is wait till they've gone away to the next person to arrive. Either stay in the car with windows & doors locked and shut, or get out the car LOCK IT and walk away. This is when your stuff is most at risk from being nicked. Work out how much you'd like to get for your stuff, and also what realistically you'd accept. Go to a booty the week before to see what prices people charge for stuff. If you're flogging clothes it's a good idea to have them on a rail on hangers. Books, old videos, cassettes and LP's don't sell very well. Wear comfy shoes & clothing, a decent brolly, some plastic sheet in case it rains. Carrier bags for your sellers to take their stuff [if they've got a bag they're more inclined to buy something else from you]. A sense of humour and be prepared to haggle, you don't want to take it all the stuff back home, do you? And your first booty will be the best one money-wise. Good luck!!

Personally I hate having to ask the price of every little thing . Stalls that have * everything 50p * on a table / box or whatever are a draw for me. Better still is * fill a bag for �1 *

And take loads of carrier bags. People always want them and love it when you have them.

why brave the wind and the rain for pennies? get yourself a digital camera and an ebay account and get selling! You'll make loads more and have the fun of watching the bidding. Just make sure you recieve payment before sending the item and you check out postage before you list items. And bear in mind listing costs and final bidding fees when you list/sell your item. It's great fun and I've made loads of money (�500+) on clearing out my attic and wardrobes!
