I don't know which sort you have but the ones i've got are similar to the strut things you get on car hatchbacks like a piston which operates when the oil in the piston expands . Mine have got a similar screw in operation to yours but the only thing I can suggest is to take them off during the winter months clean them with WD40 and store them somewhere dry and then lubricate them before you put them back on .
For what it's worth, I have a similar problem: having replaced the first pair in my greenhouse which became ineffective, the second pair have also failed - I suspect the oil or whatever gently leaks. Neither manufacturer has been helpful as both sets were outside the one year warrany period but it's a bit frustrating as they weren't cheap.
The ones I look after have lasted 10years at least perhaps if they are kept on in the winter months the pistons contract for long periods compressing the oil possibly leading to failure.
