why is it said to be unlucky to bring lilacs indoors

It could simply be because the scent is very strong - and it does bring on headaches in a lot of people.

But that's a guess.
The roots drop soil all over the floor?
The sent is very strong and its the Norfolk lilacs that thy say is unlucky
Once they're in they won't leave for a few months, run up huge phone bills, use all the hot water and charge adult channels to your sky account.
In Victorian times Lilac was a sign of unrequited desire, once inside a house it dies quite quickly..hence the desire to see it thrive and not see it die
