Porch and canopy

Thinking about getting a porch and a full lenght canopy (that covers the lengh of the front of our house)
Im starting to research it but love to hear any experiences of anyones.

I'm not really sure what you want to hear Sunflower. We already have a canopy but had a porch built during Winter 2005/6. The company we used were brilliant but it took time, because of the weather. The roofer didn't work when it was windy and there was a break of two weeks for Christmas. It has improved our house no end!

im having problems finding a picture of one online.
Do I need to get an architec to draw it for planning?
should really just phone the council first.
theres oe up the road maybe i should knock and ask them who done etc
