Why did my Cherry tree Die?

I have a cherry tree that bear beautiful cherries for the last 2 years. It is about 5 years old and this year it has not budded and there are small buds on the tree but dry up. It looks like its dead. Is it dead and why would it die?

Without seeing it, it's hard to tell but could possibly be due to the dry spring, as a shallow rooted tree it is prone to suffer from drought.
Other things like bacterial canker, fungal attack are other possibilities.
