What is the law regarding overhanging branches? I have been told that if I chop them down, I should return them to their owner. Is this true? S

Yes.

You are also entitled to ask the owner to cut the branches themselves, if you don't want to.

Thanks Ethel.
In addition to Ethels answer. If they refuse you are legally entitled to cut down any branches overhanging your property.

However they still remain your neighbors property so you have to return them however you see fit.
But lets be sensible- most people couldnt really give a stuff what their neighbours do with overhanging branches and certainly have not got the slightest interest in receiving them back!!
if its there tree they should be responsible for it and if they dont cut it back and you have to you have a right to throw the branches over on to there property for them to dispose of i have tjhis problem myself so i sought advice

Hello,
I have very tall deciduous trees near the boundary. My neighbours cut off branches and throw the branches over the fence wrecking plants, bushes, trellis etc. There is absolutely no possibility of talking with them. Already tried,
all they do is shout, scream, swear and use disgusting name calling. What can I do please? Also, come Autumn they collect all the fallen leaves from all three of their other tree lined boundaries, bag them all up together and empty all of the leaves over my particular fence. nine bin bags full this year caused tremendous damage. What can I do please?Thank you.
