If renting your house out - does one need to cancel things like telephone line, council tax, TV licence, utility bills? I have never done this before..its all a bit of a minefield to me...
I rent a property and we cancelled all of the above you mention. It would be up to the tenant to set up their own telephone line, council tax etc.
We have a letting agent who did this all for us. If you have not got an agent, then you should contact the relevant utility companies to inform them that you no longer live and the property and you;d like to terminate their services.
Inform the council that you no longer live and the property and that you intend to let the property.
When your tenants move in make sure that they register with the TV License, and council tax. If you hire an agent they should do all of this for you.
The only thing I would leave, if anything is just the TV licence, they can buy it next year, as for the rest put them in the tenants name, if they do a runner without paying the electric etc, you will be liable
I rent my property, and i have everything in my name.
By law i have been told that from some time in the near future you have to do all dealings by a third party e.g estate agents, or letting company.
They will hold the deposit money for you.I think its safer that way for both you and tenant.
